Themes of causality and performance run throughout the drawings, providing more intimate backstories for his minimalist sculptures and installations. The early editioned sculpture Ball Drop (1961–64) comprises a tall plywood box with two square holes cut into its face. A wooden sphere sits in a compartment framed by the lower hole. Exactly one week after the interactions with the replica in front of the gallery, three days after a group show in London in which this project was also presented and after multiple unanswered social media ‘reach-outs’, the Gagosian posted a video of them dropping the ball into the original sculpture. The main theme of the exhibition is that of temporality, stemming from the climactic nature of the show. Preparation begins in advance of the event and everyone works frantically towards the culmination: the one-off, once-in-a-lifetime private view. The title of the exhibition is an ode to this moment, wherein bystanders wait at the side of a racing track for a racer to pass by in a flash. It grapples with the ritualistic gathering at a specific place to witness an event that only lasts moments – disproportionate to all of the preparation, anticipation and suspense. It is a linear narrative which is almost absurd in its catharsis and the exhibition mirrors this sentiment in both its format and in its works’ attempt to address various forms of temporality. Daniel Hölzl employs site-specific works with similar whimsical effect. Two inflatable pillars create an intervention to the space, mirroring the ways in which towns and cities are disrupted during race events. The viewer is forced into cycles of waiting, expectancy and surprise as the pillars inflate and deflate but the binary nature of the pillars invite the questions–for which version of pillar are we waiting, and why? The presence of two tubes, which rise and fall sometimes out of sync, sometimes concurrently, also hint towards the duality of the viewer/viewed paradigm and its relative power dynamic. The use of recycled bags in the construction of the piece is a timely consideration of the materiality of plastic. Recontextualised within this piece, it allows us to evaluate how the reuse of materials can shift their narrative from simply linear to something more dynamic. This is an exhibition which attempts to go beyond a simple exploration of temporality, but rather it offers a varied insight to how we, as humans, relate to experiences which are bound or defined by temporal constraints. In Victor Turner’s anthropological essay Liminality and Communitas within ‘The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure’, Turner investigates the idea of the liminal period within social rites of passage and ritual, writing that ‘what is interesting about liminal phenomena [...] is the blend they offer of lowliness and sacredness, of homogeneity and comradeship’. In many ways, the artists all depict their own form of ritual or ceremony. With both Tschaidse and Blanco, we are presented with works which confront a sense of occasion, somehow in a way which manipulates the viewer to redefine and reauthor their relation to a certain event, even collectively. Works by Lessig and Hölzl investigate a form of temporal liminality by focusing on the medial and in between within everyday and nonsensical rituals. This empty nylon vessel was then inflated by an electric fan using the air from the very same room it represents, all the time being suspended from the office window. The ubiquitous Rundgang is a staple of the Germanic art school calendar — a yearly disruption and transformation of the making and administrative space into public exhibition. As a result of this piece, what was once a working environment loses its original function and all for the creation of another white cube. Both the colour of this sculpture and choice to occupy a room normally associated with examination hint towards a visual parodying of those sites in which art is often objectified. Having been interested in Hans Haacke's early works, particularly his interest in system aesthetics, with this work I am utilizing the architectural potentials of minimalist sculpture to return to the larger question of “structure” and its place in defining and confining human relational complexes. volume no. one, volume no. two and volume no. three are a single body of work, three distinct sculptures and three varieties of the same entity played out sequentially: 1- erratic 2- formalized 3- budding. The element of time, central to the piece, is accentuated not only by the three-dimensionality of the medium in general and the cyclical nature of this work in particular but also by the sound emanating from the work’s mechanical components. Powered by two small computers, the concealed machinery and the embedded code use the mathematical dimensions of the work, itself based on the standard ceiling height since 1960s, and program the synthetic movement in volume no. two and volume no. three. The works’ dual character is also highlighted by the material contrast between black mild steel and rip-stop nylon. In his first presentation with our gallery, Hölzl creates a site-specific performative-sculptural installation on and extending off the facade of the gallery building located at Linienstraße 23, Berlin-Mitte. The project, titled BAIT, will be on view day and night for the duration of the Gallery Weekend *Discoveries programming, Wednesday through Sunday, September 15–19, from 11 AM to 7 PM. This form is then mirrored and hung directly above it, installed from the second-floor window. Each form is filled with air and programmed to inflate and deflate. Each entity moves in synchronized alternation, in response to each other. Extending from the main gallery entrance and street level and overhanging upper gallery windows are series of carbon fiber fishing rods. Fixed in place with magnets and ropes, these structures reach away from the architecture, then curve again inward, bending into the building, augmented by their potential. In Bait, Hölzl continues to investigate the dynamics of built environments. Employing carefully selected materials, the artist focuses on the transience of every moment while connecting the installation to the site and its visitors. The inflatable volume measuring 800m3 will fill the void above the main entrance. The work “soft cycles” uses a transparent membrane to create a space where fragments of inflatable sculptures from earlier projects implemented by the artist at various places in Berlin are rearranged into one huge structure. The object, made of recycled white parachute silk, absorbs and releases air at pre-defined intervals. This unbroken repetition is a reference to constant change: in the museum, where exhibits and exhibition architecture are regularly mounted and then dismantled; in the city, which is always evolving; and in all materials as they erode almost imperceptibly over time. As the installation switches from one phase to the next, the impression of bursting fullness gives way to one of apparent emptiness, and new forms emerge from the old. Watching the work is an experience like fast-forwarding the steady alteration of monumental structures. The exhibition builds on the artist’s ongoing material and conceptual research into cycles of transformation, industrial memory, and the poetics of propulsion—extending the themes introduced in his 2022 solo exhibition GROUNDED. Hölzl’s multidisciplinary practice is defined by a sensitive yet critical engagement with the systems and materials that shape modern life. Fusing sculptural engineering with ephemerality, he explores the entangled lifecycles of aviation, energy, and ecological consciousness. At the core of PROPEL are three types of propellers—each a meditation on movement, innovation, collapse, and transformation—recalling the forms of both seed and bomb, origin and end. The first, attached to a historic radial engine from a “candy bomber,” features deformed aluminum blades that graze the floor, suspended between flight and failure. Meanwhile, at the center of the gallery, three hollow carbon-fiber propellers spin overhead in a kinetic installation, releasing drops of pigment—black ink made from recycled air pollution—that arc through space, striking the walls and gradually forming a continuous line. The third group, cast in paraffin wax, was warped by sunlight and continues to shift with the ambient temperature, echoing the entropy of both technology and nature. Accompanying the sculptures is a series of paintings of wilted flowers, rendered with melted wax and heat.
